Omicron BF.7: a new variant of COVID, a new threat to people
What are the symptoms of Omicron BF.7 and are there any precautions?
The world is now at risk because of Omicron subvariant BF.7, the new variant that caused the recent increase in coronavirus cases in China. Three to four cases have reportedly been documented in India thus far, according to verified official sources at the health ministry.
According to sources, the new Omicron variety has a short incubation period and spreads swiftly. But up until now, it hasn’t raised too many red flags.
Okay, let’s dive in for more information.
What is Omicron BF.7?
With one of the highest transmissibilities among all Covid variants, the variant is an Omicron mutant. According to studies, this mutant has an R0 value (it is a measure of the standard “spreadability” of a transmissible infection) of roughly 10-18.6, which means that every person who is infected can spread the disease to 10-18.6 persons nearby.
The danger of catching this virus is higher in those who are not vaccinated or have compromised immune systems, such as the elderly, youngsters, pregnant women, and those with several co-morbid conditions like cancer, uncontrolled diabetes, and heart or kidney problems.
What are the possible symptoms of the BF.7 strain?
The symptoms are similar to those of earlier Covid-19 versions, including respiratory tract infection, fever, cough, sore throat, muscle discomfort, weariness, etc.
Another symptom that is common among the elderly or those with underlying conditions is pneumonia. However, several kinds of research are still in progress to find any distinct symptoms.
Are there any precautions against this new COVID variant?
Since the new variant is still under control in India, there are no particular precautions other than the previous Covid-19 restrictions.
However, it is critical to abide by COVID regulations now more than ever with Christmas and New Year’s celebrations quickly approaching. Yet, doctors have advised all to put their masks on, follow social conventions regarding distance, and wash their hands very often.
Furthermore, it has been predicted that during the next three months, 60% of the population in China will acquire this new strain. Also, since people travel across the world, it is feasible for the disease to spread throughout the globe, including India, by air travel.
Time will tell
The BF.7 variant of Omicron has a quick transmission rate. Doctors suggest a fourth vaccination shot would be beneficial.
However, everything is still blurry at this point. Only time will tell what will occur in the coming months, but we should be on guard, adhere to Covid proper behaviour, and limit our travel as much as possible.
